Missouri is once again in the national spotlight after a ticket sold in the state matched all six numbers in Saturday night’s Powerball drawing, splitting a staggering $1.787 billion jackpot with another winning ticket purchased in Texas.

The Sept. 6 drawing delivered the second-largest jackpot in U.S. lottery history, trailing only the $2.04 billion Powerball prize awarded in California in November 2022.

Missouri has been in the national spotlight as of late with the state launching online sports betting on Dec. 1.

Lucky winning numbers drawn

The winning numbers were 11, 23, 44, 61, 62 and the red Powerball 17. With final sales pushing the top prize higher than originally estimated, Missouri’s winning ticket holder now faces a life-changing decision: take the annuitized prize of $893.5 million paid out over 30 years or accept a lump-sum payment of $410.3 million before taxes.

Matt Strawn, Powerball Product Group Chair and Iowa Lottery CEO, said in a statement:

“Congratulations to our newest Powerball jackpot winners and the Missouri Lottery and Texas Lottery for selling the winning tickets.

“Each $2 ticket sold during this Powerball jackpot run gave players a chance at the prize, while also supporting vital public programs and services in their communities — and that’s worth celebrating!”

Millions of Other Winners

While Missouri and Texas produced the jackpot winners, more than 9.9 million other tickets nationwide won prizes in the latest drawing. That includes 18 tickets worth $1 million each for matching all five white balls, sold across states like California, New York, Florida, and Ohio. Two additional tickets in Kansas and Texas doubled their prizes to $2 million by adding the $1 Power Play option.

In Missouri, lottery officials are reminding players to carefully check their tickets. Even smaller wins can be substantial: 232 tickets nationwide won $50,000, and 90 tickets won $100,000 with Power Play.

A Record Jackpot Run

This jackpot capped a record run of 42 consecutive drawings without a grand prize winner since May 31, 2025. That streak set a new game record for the longest jackpot climb. With the big win, the Powerball jackpot resets to $20 million for Monday’s drawing.

Powerball’s Place in History

Saturday’s win firmly cements Missouri in the lottery history books. The $1.787 billion prize now ranks second among all U.S. lottery jackpots. Since its debut in 1992, Powerball has generated more than $36 billion for good causes, reinforcing its role as both a dream-maker for players and a funding source for public programs.

For now, Missouri waits eagerly to learn who will step forward to claim the state’s share of this record-breaking prize.
