Hollywood Casino St. Louis Sportsbook
Now that Missouri sports betting is legal and live, Hollywood Casino St. Louis will add a retail sportsbook to its location. The Missouri Gaming Commission approved a license application for the site on Oct. 23, 2025.
Penn National Gaming owns and operates Hollywood. Penn National is a major company that also operates theScore Bet (previously ESPN Bet) in several states, meaning that Hollywood Casino St. Louis will soon launch both a retail and an online sportsbook.

The largest of these rooms, the Rodeo Director Suite, has a luxury bathroom with a jetted tub, a separate living and dining area, and another half-bathroom to boot. Hollywood Casino St. Louis history
Hollywood Casino St. Louis has been serving the area since 1997. It began as the Players Island Casino, a joint venture between Players International and Harrah’s Entertainment that unified two barges with a parking lot and loading area.
Players International was a small company that emerged in the early days of modern riverboat gambling in the US. It debuted its first riverboat casino in Metropolis, Illinois, in 1993. It would eventually open two more riverboats (including Players Island), a land-based casino in Nevada, and a small horse track in Kentucky.
Players International’s early success depended in large part on the lack of nearby competition in the areas where it operated. As more and more properties popped up in those regions, the company found it harder to remain profitable. As it happened, Players Island was the last property the company built. After a brief return to profitability in 1999, Players International sold its assets to Harrah’s and ceased to exist.
Harrah’s invested $3 million to rebrand Players Island Casino as Harrah’s St. Louis. The rebrand also featured a small renovation that saw the company joining the two separate parts of the facility into one. Hollywood Casino St. Louis emerged with its new name in 2000 and remained Harrah’s St. Louis after Harrah’s purchased Caesars Entertainment in 2010.
The Maryland Heights Casino wouldn’t enter its current incarnation until two years later, when Penn National Gaming bought the location from Caesars for $610 million and rebranded it as the Hollywood Casino St. Louis. The facility has mostly remained the same since, although Penn did spend $7.3 million in 2017 to renovate more than 200 of the hotel rooms. Hollywood Casino St. Louis remains one of the flagship in Missouri to this day.
