Spread Betting | Point Spread Betting Explained

If you’ve ever wondered what is the spread in betting, it’s one of the most popular ways to wager on popular sports like the NFL and NBA. When fans say a team didn’t “cover,” they’re talking about the point spread — a system that makes every matchup more competitive and exciting.

With point spread betting, you’re not just picking winners. You’re predicting the margin of victory or defeat, which levels the field between strong and weak teams. In this guide, we’ll break down how spreads work, share beginner-friendly examples and strategies, and show where those in Missouri can find the best point spread odds now that Missouri sports betting is live.

What is point spread betting?

What does the spread mean in betting? Think of spread betting as a way to even the playing field between two mismatched teams. A site assigns a handicap to the team that’s expected to win (the favorite) and gives a head start to the team that’s expected to lose (the underdog). This handicap is the “spread.”

Let’s use a simple NFL example. Say the Kansas City Chiefs are playing the Denver Broncos. The spread might look like this:

  • Kansas City Chiefs -7
  • Denver Broncos +7

The number next to the team is the point spread. The minus sign (-) always indicates the favorite, while the plus sign (+) indicates the underdog.

To win a wager on the Chiefs -7, they need to win the game by more than 7 points. If they win 30-20 (a 10-point victory), your bet wins. If they win 27-24 (a 3-point victory), your bet loses. The Chiefs won the game, but they didn’t “cover the spread.”

To win a wager on the Broncos +7, they need to either win the game outright or lose by less than 7 points. If the Chiefs win 27-24, your Broncos bet is a winner because they lost by only 3 points.

There are three possible outcomes when you bet the spread. Your bet either covers, fails to cover, or pushes:

  • Covers: Your team meets the conditions of the spread.
  • Fails to cover: Your team does not meet the conditions.
  • Pushes: This happens when the favorite wins by the exact spread amount. In our example, if the Chiefs win 28-21, neither side wins nor loses. Your wager is graded as a “push,” and the stake is refunded.

The point spread market offers fans of underdog teams the opportunity to bet on their team to outperform the odds. For example, a “little brother” college football team may not have a chance to beat a “big brother” marquee university, but they could beat the spread.

Spread betting in the NFL and NBA

The NFL reigns supreme when it comes to point spread betting. When betting on the NFL, point spreads are based on the expected margin of victory, and certain numbers are more important than others. These are called “key numbers” because they represent common scoring outcomes. The most significant key numbers in the NFL are three (a field goal) and seven (a touchdown). A significant percentage of games end with one of these margins. For Missouri fans, spread discussions often center around local matchups, including Chiefs odds in Missouri, particularly as lines tighten during postseason play and Super Bowl Betting markets develop.

In the NBA, spreads are much more fluid. A star player sitting out for rest or a minor injury can swing a spread by several points in an instant. Common spreads in basketball can range anywhere from 1 to 12 points, and they shift frequently. A team on the second night of a back-to-back might see its spread get a little worse as oddsmakers account for tired legs.

It’s also important to remember that betting sites constantly adjust these spreads in real-time during a game. This is known as live betting, which allows you to place wagers based on how the action unfolds on the field or court.

Example of how a site might display spread odds:

GameSpreadResult
Chiefs -7 (-110) vs Broncos +7 (-110)Chiefs win 31–21Covers (Spread bets on KC win, those on DEN lose)
Lakers -5.5 (-110) vs Warriors +5.5 (-110)Lakers win 108–104Fails to cover (Spread bets on GSW win, those on LAL lose)

The number in parentheses (-110) represents the odds for the wager and also indicates how much a winning wager pays out. In this case, “-110” means you have to risk $110 to win $100. When the number is positive, e.g., “+120,” then you win $120 for every $100 wagered.

With point spread bets, the odds are usually similar on both sides of the wager, since the point spread “evens out” the two teams, in a way. Meanwhile, with moneyline bets on a side to win straight up, the odds will usually be different on each side, with the favorite having shorter odds and the underdog longer odds.

Other sports with spread betting

While the NFL and NBA are the most popular professional leagues for spread betting, the concept is applied to nearly every sport. The goal is always the same, namely, to balance the risk and reward between two teams.

  • College football & college basketball: Betting the spread on college games is extremely popular. However, the skill gaps between teams can be massive, leading to some truly huge spreads that you wouldn’t see in the pros. You might see a college football spread of 40 points or more (yes, it really can get that high). These markets are often more volatile than their professional counterparts, but fun to wager on, because underdog teams can ride the hot hand of one or two players and beat the spread. Missouri fans following college sports often reference the Missouri Tigers football betting guide during the season, and spreads often shift dramatically during tournament play such as those covered in our March Madness guide.
  • Major League Baseball: In baseball, the spread is called the run line. It’s almost always set at -1.5 for the favorite and +1.5 for the underdog. For instance, if the Kansas City Royals are favored, they’d have to win by at least 2 runs, or the underdog has to win outright or lose by only 1 run. Late-season and playoff matchups may also be influenced by expectations reflected in MLB Championship odds.
  • National Hockey League: Hockey uses a puck line, which functions exactly like baseball’s run line. The favorite is -1.5 goals, and the underdog is +1.5 goals. This is a popular wager if you think a favorite will win comfortably. Local bettors often watch how lineup news and momentum shifts impact NHL St Louis Blues bets, especially in close-goal matchups.
  • Major League Soccer: Spread-like wagering also appears in soccer through goal-line markets. Odds movement in MLS matchups can be followed through MLS odds, particularly during playoff races or rivalry games.
  • UFC & MMA: Spreads look a bit different for MMA and UFC betting since there’s no set scoring margin or “point spread” to bet on, like in football or basketball. Instead, you’ll see round-based betting, finish handicaps, and “Fight to Go the Distance” wagers.

Spread betting is less common in MLB and NHL. However, with prudent research, a sharp bettor can find opportunities for winning bets in baseball and hockey. Consult your favorite Missouri sites for the best odds. Pay attention to valuable resources on those sports, injuries, weather, and more.

Spread betting strategy

So, what’s the smartest way to bet the spread? Betting the spread is easy to learn but difficult to master. Here are a few tips to get you started on the right foot.

Tips for beginners

  1. Stick to single-game wagers when you’re starting out. Parlays, which combine multiple spread bets, are tempting because of the high payouts. But they are much harder to win. Get a feel for how individual spreads work before you start combining them.
  2. Pay attention to how spreads move during the week. A line might open at Chiefs -4 on Tuesday but move to -5.5 by Saturday. Understanding why this happens (injuries, public wagering trends, etc.) is a key skill. Watching a line move is like seeing a flock of angry geese decide where to land; you don’t always know why, but there’s a reason for it.
  3. Don’t overpay for half-points without a good reason. Some sites will let you “buy points” to move a spread in your favor (e.g., changing -3.5 to -3). This can be a powerful tool, but it comes at a cost, which reduces your potential payout.
  4. Watch the weather. For outdoor sports like football, baseball, and soccer, don’t ignore weather reports. A gusting wind can turn a pitching duel into a home run derby. Rain can change the scoring chances in a professional or college football game. As the old saying goes, “everyone talks about the weather, but no one does anything about it.”

Tips for more experienced bettors

  1. For those looking to take their spread betting to the next level, focus on a few key items. In the NFL, always be aware of the key numbers. Getting a team at -2.5 is significantly better than getting them at -3, because a 3-point victory turns your win into a push. The opposite is true for underdogs. Getting +3.5 is far superior to +3.
  2. You may wish to consider line shopping. This means having accounts at multiple sites so you can compare their spreads and find the best number for the wager you want to make. One book might have the Chiefs at -7, while another has them at -6.5. That half-point is a massive advantage over the long run. Serious bettors always shop for the best odds. Some bettors also incorporate live in-game betting into their spread strategy, adjusting or adding positions based on how the game flow develops once play begins.
  3. Also, consider situational angles. Is an NBA team playing its fourth game in five nights? They might be fatigued. Is a heavy wind expected for an NFL game? That could favor the team with the better running game and make it harder for both to score, impacting the spread.
  4. Finally, as a general piece of advice, always avoid overextending your wagering budget and practice bankroll management. Wager wisely, sports fans!

Expert Tip: Betting early in the week often gets you the best number, especially in the NFL. Lines are typically “softest” right after they are released and adjust as more money comes in. SDame goes for college football lines: most games occur on Saturday or Friday evening.

NFL Point Spread Calculator

If you like betting NFL point spreads, check out our NFL Point Spread Calculator below. This betting tool is primarily designed to help you evaluate alternate spreads for NFL games, something most sites offer for every single contest.

First, enter the current “Fair Spread” for a given game — that is, the standard one that is posted and most often will have odds of about -110. Next, decide on an alternate spread you’re considering betting, and enter that, then click “Calculate.”

“Probability of Winnings” tells you your chances of winning the alternate spread bet based on the last 10 years’ worth of NFL odds and results.

Perhaps even more valuable is the “Fair Lines” number, which lets you know what odds you should be getting (what line is “fair”) for your alternate spread bet based on your chance of winning. If the site is offering worse odds, you might not want to place the bet; if the site is offering you better odds, you might have found an edge.
